Felt vs. Fiberglass Vinyl Sheet Backing

Vinyl sheet flooring includes a number of layers, including the backing material, which can be made of either felt or fiberglass. Felt backing is used in more than 90 percent of vinyl sheet florrs, while fiberglass backing is a newer material that provides a greater cushion and more installation options than vinyl flooring with felt backing.

Felt / Fibeglass Backing Differences

The primary difference between felt and fiberglass is the way in which they are installed. Felt backing adheres to the subfloor, while fiberglass backing is installed without glue and makes the sheet more stable and allows it to lay flat, all the while providing additional underfoot cushion. The uppermost layers of vinyl sheet flooring are identical, and include a protective top coat, clear vinyl layer, and vinyl design layer.
