How Stain resistant is Stain Resistance Carpet?

Spilling red wine in the middle of an all-white living room carpet may make you cringe, but stain resistant carpet promises the wine can easily be removed without leaving a stain. Even though every carpet manufacturer today claims their stain resistant carpet is the best available, the question really is does stain resistant carpet actually satisfy its claims.

A variety of fabrics and fibers are used to manufacture carpet, including stain resistant carpet, including silk, wool, nylon, polypropylene and polyester. In today's carpet manufacturing industry, nylon is the most frequent used fiber due to the resilient characteristics against abrasion, wear and mildew.

All stain resistant carpets are made using the specific determined to be "the best" by individual carpet manufacturers, and even how the formula is applied to the carpet itself varies between manufacturers. But no matter the technique used, the process is basically the same.

As nylon is the material used most frequently in carpet manufacturing, it will be used in this example. Either the manufacturer of the nylon will treat the nylon with chemicals prior to shipping it to the carpet mills or the chemical will be applied directly to the carpet after the final stages of manufacture. The stain resistance chemicals, such as Teflon and Tactesse, are applied to the carpet to prevent oil from adhering to the carpet by slowing the absorption. Most stain resistant carpets are resistant to most foods, wines, ink, rust and pet accidents.

Keep in mind though, stain resistant carpet simply resists stains - it is not stain-proof. The chemicals used to treat the stain resistant carpet slow down the absorption rate of the liquid or oils left by spills and dropped food items, but unfortunately, they are unable to prevent them entirely. To work with the stain resistant carpet chemicals, all spills, accidents and food should be cleaned immediately to help avoid a stain in the carpet.
