How to Remove Pet Stains from Your Hardwood Floors

If you have a pet and hardwood floors, you should be aware that a pet accident will stain your flooring. Pet urine is acidic, which makes it difficult to remove odor and staining from your hardwood floors. However, if you act quickly and use the right cleaning methods, it's possible to remove these stains from your hardwood floors. Fresh stains can typically be removed easily, while older stains can take extensive work to remove.

For new stains, collect paper towels, warm water, white vinegar and a specialized stain- and odor-removing cleaner that is hardwood-friendly. First, blot the stained area with a paper towel and then scrub the area with white vinegar. Rinse the area with warm water, taking care to not overwet the floor and thus cause moisture damage on top of the stain. Blot the area completely dry with paper towels and then apply the stain- and odor-remover according to directions.

Old pet stains mean that the urine or odor may have seeped into the sub-flooring, which calls for a lengthy, extensive cleaning process. It's recommended that older pet stains are worked on by a professional trained to work with stronger hardwood floor solvents. Hardwood floors with old pet stains sometimes require resanding and restaining to remedy the stain and odor.
