Keeping Your Floors Clean and Protecting The Environment At the Same Time

The latest buzzword and trend in nearly every aspect of life is “green” in the sense of environmentally friendly, and homeowners throughout the Maryland area right in the swing of it too. Protecting the environment is important for future generations and their ability to enjoy the bounties of the Earth as we have for many generations. So when it comes to floors – both selecting a floor covering and keep it clean – opt for “green” cleaners and do your part, one mop bucket at a time.

Vinyl flooring – not to be confused with linoleum – is manufactured for a petroleum base, which is a synthetic or artificial product. Typically seen in areas of the home that are regularly exposed to water, such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms, vinyl flooring withstands tremendous use while retaining its appearance.

Keeping vinyl flooring clean begins in the greenest way possible – just sweep the dirt and debris away without cleaning agents of any type. Using door mats at each entrance to the home, as well as rugs in the most heavily trafficked areas of the home, is the best line of first defense against a dirty and grimy vinyl floor. Removing the dirt is the object of the floor-cleaning game, so by catching it before it touches the floor is always a good option.

Eventually you'll have to bring out the mop, though, and the best way to clean your vinyl floor is a simple solution of water and liquid detergent. Vinyl flooring is not porous, so there is no need to worry about exposing the surface to too much water, it will not absorb it.

If you need to rejuvenate the shine of your vinyl flooring, simply add a small amount of distilled white vinegar to the water and soap solution. Always avoid scrubbing the floor too harshly, and never use abrasive cleaners or tools on the vinyl flooring – this will damage it.
