Engineered Hardwood Flooring Offers Durability and Low Maintenance

Enamored by the beauty and rich look of hardwood flooring, but less than thrilled by its maintenance needs? Consider engineered hardwood, which offers the same look as solid hardwood floors, but with increased durability and decreased need for maintenance.

Engineered hardwood flooring is made up of a core of hardwood or plywood and a top layer of hardwood veneer glued on the top surface of the core and available in almost any hardwood species. The top hardwood layer is the same genuine hardwood you see in solid hardwood floors. Since it contains actual hardwood, engineered hardwood flooring features the natural characteristics of its wood species, while its engineered component offers greater stability and durability.

Solid hardwood flooring is extremely susceptible to moisture and heat, leading floors to warp, cup, swell, or split apart. Engineered hardwood are glued and laminated under high pressure and heat, making engineered floors well suited to areas with higher humidity and heat, as compared to solid hardwood. This makes engineered hardwood flooring a better choice for installation over radiant heat sources, over concrete, and in rainy climates. Engineered hardwoods are also resistant to seasonal contraction and expansion. What's more, engineered hardwood comes pre-finished, meaning it's already sanded and sealed and can be walked on right after installation. In addition to its top hardwood veneer, engineered wood flooring typically has three or more core layers, leading to a high level of stability with each layer.
