Caring for the Bamboo Floor in your Laurel, MD Home

The investment in a new bamboo floor for your Laurel, Maryland home is one entered into with caution and care; the same way the new bamboo floor should be treated as well. This is not to say you should avoid walking on the bamboo flooring - that would just be silly, it is after all a floor. Bamboo flooring is quite strong and durable, and honestly it can take some abuse, but the right care and maintenance is important to keeping it looking like new for as long as possible.

First, check with the manufacturer of the bamboo flooring for their recommendations for care and cleaning. We say this because no matter how many different sources tell you one approach for cleaning and caring for your bamboo floor is the best or only way, the only opinion you should never question is that of the manufacturer. General best practice advice is great - but only after you consult with the makers of the bamboo flooring.

  • Never mop your bamboo floor, in the traditional sense at least. Avoid using too much water on the bamboo flooring as water can lead to significant damage to the bamboo flooring. Use a dry mop, or a damp mop, to clean spills and sticky matters - never a wet mop. Always dry the cleaned area with a dry, clean, dirt-free towel as soon as possible.
  • Sweep or vacuum (with the beater bar turned off) regularly to eliminate small particulate matter that can easily scratch the surface of the bamboo flooring. Removing the dirt will prevent the problem of scratching the bamboo flooring which will lead to a like-new floor longer.
  • Never drag furniture or other heavy objects across the floor. When heavy items must be moved, pick them up and carry them to the desired location. Even the newest of furniture may have rough spots on the "feet" and can easily cause a great deal of damage to your new bamboo floor.
  • Remove shoes, or at least provide floor mats or rugs for wiping of shoes at each entrance of your Laurel, MD home. Eliminating the dirt and grime that can scratch your floor is the best defense against damaging your bamboo flooring.
