How To Best Clean Ceramic Tile Flooring In Your Northern Virginia Home

Keeping a new ceramic tile floor looking like new in your Northern Virginia home and ensuring it lasts for many years is as simple as following a few simple cleaning tips.

  • Sweep it regularly. This may seem like an obvious ceramic tile floor cleaning tip, but it is often overlooked by homeowners. Dirt sticks to the surface of the ceramic tile, even more so when the ceramic tile has a textured surface. Regularly sweeping keeps the dirt from adhering to the surface while also loosening any stuck-on debris.
  • Vacuum the corners. Using a vacuum cleaner - with the beater bar turned off - is a fantastic way to remove dirt and dust from the ceramic tile that may accumulate in the hard-to-reach areas such as corners and under cabinetry.
  • Strategically placed doormats are essential to keeping your ceramic tile floor looking like new. Since dirt and dust can sand away the finish of the ceramic tile when walked on, placing a doormat at each entrance will eliminate a large portion of the dirt and dust that could enter your home, and significantly reduce the amount of time spent cleaning.
  • Spills happen, and when they do, mild scrubbing with a soft brush or electric polisher can do the trick. After cleaning your ceramic tile floor with a manufacturer-approved cleaning agent, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean, warm water, which will rid the ceramic tile floor of any remaining residue.
  • Always clean-up spills as soon as possible to prevent staining of the grout used between the tiles.
  • Never use steel wool, scouring powders, scouring pads or any other type of abrasive cleaning agent to clean your ceramic tile floor. The abrasives may scratch the finish of the ceramic tile, leaving you with a bigger problem than what you started with.
  • Avoid using cleaning products made with bleach or ammonia on your ceramic tile. While the bleach or ammonia may not harm the actual ceramic tile, they can lead to discoloration of the grout if used routinely.
