Green Construction Characteristics of Bamboo Flooring For Your Northern Virginia Home

The green building movement has swept through Northern Virginia, and bamboo flooring fits right in the trend for both new home construction and home remodeling projects. Bamboo flooring is considered green flooring as it is an eco-friendly, widely renewable material.

Contrary to popular belief, bamboo is not wood. Instead, bamboo is a member of the grass family and grows much faster than wood. The majority of bamboo flooring sold in the United States is made of moso bamboo grows up to four-feet tall in one day. In perfect growing conditions and left to its own devices, moso bamboo can grow as much as 80 feet in as little as 50 days. While it takes a hard-wood tree between 20 and 120 years to reach its full level of maturity, moso bamboo is fully mature and ready for harvesting in as little in three to five years.

Bamboo flooring is also a green flooring choice because of the way it is harvested. When the bamboo is harvested for use, the root structure is left untouched, retains its ability to hold the soil in place, and prevents erosion of the soil. In eco-friendly bamboo forests, known mostly as sustainable forests, only 20 percent of the bamboo is harvested each year, which means each bamboo forest is fully replenished every five years.

Unlike most hardwood trees and vegetation in general, bamboo does not have many pests and therefore does not require pesticides. Also, bamboo does not require irrigation or fertilizing when planted in its natural habitat. These factors alone significantly reduce the carbon footprint created by other types of hardwood flooring.

Whether considering replacing old and worn carpet throughout your entire Northern Virginia home, or simply replacing the floor in one or two rooms, choosing a green flooring can assist in protecting the environment.
